Don't be scammed by franchise car rental companies which quote you very cheap rates online and hit you on arrival in Costa Rica with all kinds of
insurance covered by your credit card, or by fees which don't exist in Costa Rica. Doubling or even tripling your initial bill.

WARNING 2 Some car rentals like Usave quote you in US$, convert your US$ bill into Colones at an exchange rate which is too high, then charge your credit card in Colones, which adds another 4% to 10% to your US$ bill All rates on this page are charged in US$ to your credit card WARNING 3 Several car rentals like Thrifty Car Rental deliver you a rental car with full fuel tank which you must prepay. Then you are told to return the car with an empty fuel tank Of course you don't get a refund for the gas in your tank if you return the car! This daytime robbery is illegal in Costa Rica and absolutely NOT mandatory. Normally car rentals want you to return the car with the same amount of fuel as on car delivery. |

Before your departure to Costa Rica you should call the special 24/7 number of your bank which you find on the back of your credit card.
Tell your bank when and for how many days you will be in Costa Rica By doing this you avoid your credit card is declined, regardless your credit limit, by your bank's automated Fraud Protection System Car rental companies are often the first place where people discover their card is declined because of 'suspicious activity abroad' If you didn't call your bank before your departure, it's a good alternative to pull first some money from an ATM machine with your PIN code. Then your bank's system will register in which country you are. ATM transactions raise the red flags less quickly because they take place in a more secure environment |
