A.     About the insurance on this page
  1. The insurance on this page only covers third party liability and theft, loss or damage of the rental vehicle.   See E below   Nothing more!
  2. Medical costs, repatriation and other costs as result of a car accident or personal injury, theft or loss of personal belongings and vandalism are NOT covered by any insurance on this page.     To cover these possible costs we strongly advise you to make prior arrangements before you leave home with your local health insurance company, home owner's insurance company, car insurance company, a travel insurance company or your credit card company.
  3. All car rental companies in Costa Rica assume you are fully covered for events not included in the insurance on this page.
    B.     Third Party Waiver / Supplemental Liability Insurance (TP/SLI)   (Mandatory)
      By Costa Rica law this insurance is mandatory for ALL rental cars in Costa Rica
      The price of this insurance is already included in our rental prices
      Description of the coverage:
    TP/SLI protects from liabilities resulting from injuries or damages to third party individuals and/or property.   In other words, you are covered for
  1. Personal injuries of individuals outside the rented vehicle of up to ¢150 Million or around $250,000 USD (as of 27-Aug-2009)
  2. Limiting the total liability to third party property damage to 20 percent
    C.     Loss Damage Waiver with a Deductible of $ 975 (LDW)   (Optional)
      The price for this coverage is between $5 and $7 per day depending on make and model of rental car
      Description of the coverage:
  1. This insurance policy limits the vehicle damage (Loss Damage Waiver -LDW-) liability to a deductible of $975 USD
    and limits your liability in case of vehicle theft to a deductible of $975 USD
  2. LDW is optional, however if proof of alternate insurance is not provided client is fully liable for 100 percent of damages and / or theft of vehicle
  3. If you decide to use your credit card as the provider of LDW coverage the deposit for the rented vehicle is $2000 USD.
  4. Theft of car parts like tires, mirrors, car radio, CD player, windshields, antenna, license plates, roof rack etc. is NOT covered by this insurance.
    Also theft of personal belongings, GPS, cell phones. computers, suitcases, luggage, cooler box etc. is NOT covered by this insurance.
    D.     Super Loss Damage Waiver with a Deductible of $0 (SLDW)   (Optional)
      The price for this coverage is between $15 and $20 per day depending on make and model of rental car
      Description of the coverage:
  1. Frees you from all liabilities for paying damages of the car in case of an accident, vehicle theft, or total loss, except in case of negligence
  2. Theft of car parts like tires, mirrors, car radio, CD player, windshields, antenna, license plates, roof rack etc. is NOT covered by this insurance.
    Also theft of personal belongings, GPS, cell phones. computers, suitcases, luggage, cooler box etc. is NOT covered by this insurance.
    E.     Non-covered damages (which are a result of the following events):
  1. Driver is not authorized by the car rental company to operate the vehicle or NOT listed on the contract as (additional) driver
  2. Driver is under the influence of alcohol and/or illegal substances
  3. Vehicle is operated in a manner that is against the laws of Costa Rica
  4. Driver cannot provide an accident report from the local authorities
  5. Loss or theft of keys, tools, car parts like tires, mirrors, car radio, CD player, windshields, antenna, license plates, roof rack, detachable radio front panel etc.
  6. Loss or theft of personal belongings, GPS, cell phones. computers, suitcases, luggage, eyeglasses, cooler box etc
  7. Damage to the tires, sound system incl.radio, cd player and speakers, windows, roof rack, underside- or interior of vehicle except for collisions or theft of vehicle
  8. Damages caused to the car due to careless driving, traffic infractions, driving along areas inaccessible to cars: rivers, beaches, swamps or similar places
  9. Assistance or travel expenses in case of damaged tires, lost keys, discharged batteries for leaving the lights on, car change in case of accident, towing or rescue expenses
  10. Loss or theft of the car registration papers, vandalism
    F.     LAST BUT NOT LEAST

  1. Collision Damage Waiver- and Theft Protection deductibles are doubled for drivers between ages 18 to 21
  2. Insurance does NOT cover damage to the tires, sound system incl.radio, cd player and speakers, windows, roof rack, underside- or interior of vehicle except for collisions or theft of vehicle
  3. If the car registration papers are removed from the rental vehicle, lost or stolen, you are fully responsible for all costs to request replacement papers from the National Registry of Costa Rica, which must be done thru an official lawyer.
    In this case you are also responsible for the loss of rental revenues by the car rental company till 48 hours after the moment the car rental company receives the replacent registration papers.
    No car rental company will rent a car without valid car registration papers because it's a US$ 500 fine and possible confiscation of the car if you are stopped by a traffic police officer and you cannot show any registration papers.
    You can take the papers with you when parked or staying in a hotel, but please make sure the papers are in the car again when you return the car.
